The Colônia de Santo Ângelo , also Colônia Santo Ângelo , was a settlement of German migrants in the area of the Brazilian city of Cachoeira do Sul in the then province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul (now the state of Rio Grande do Sul ). Due to the subdivision of communes, the colony is now largely in the area of the city of Agudo .

Founded by the provincial administration in 1855, the institution was named after the provincial governor Ângelo Muniz da Silva Ferraz . The first German immigrants reached the area on November 1, 1857, when they landed on the left bank of the Rio Jacuí in Cerro Chato. These settlers, who mainly came from Pomerania , received an average of 48 hectares of land for agricultural use.

The first director of the Colônia was Florian von Zurowski from October to December 1857. This was followed by Karl Hermann Johann Adam Woldemar , Baron von Kahlden, a figure much more important for the history of the Colony of Santo Ângelo.

From 1865 the Colônia became part of the 1st District of Cachoeira do Sul and extended on the left bank of the Rio Jacuí to the right bank of the Rio Botucaraí , which formed the border with the Colônia Germânia (today's municipality of Candelária ). The headquarters of the former colony was in the area of today's city of Agudo, while other parts of the colony laid the foundation stone for today's communities such as Paraíso do Sul 29 ° 43 ′ 48 ″ S, 53 ° 10 ′ 42 ″ W or for parts of settlements how Dona Francisca and Nova Palma (Caemborá municipality) became. In search of ever better and larger areas, the settlers expanded their presence spatially, so that settlements such as Restinga Seca, Cerro Branco and Novo Cabrais were also affected by their influence. ! 446.8215395470.2700185

For reasons of tax collection, the municipality of Cachoeira do Sul divided the municipality into six large districts on September 4, 1885, three of which fell to the Colônia de Santo Ângelo. As a result, the colony could not develop into a large commune, like the Colônia Santa Cruz could develop from the place Rio Pardo to Santa Cruz do Sul .
