geography

Location of the municipality of Trémonzey in the Vosges department

The municipality of Trémonzey is located in the extreme south of Lorraine in the catchment area of the Rhone . The approximately 9 km² large municipal area borders in the southeast on the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . It covers part of the high plateau of the Vôge , interrupted by the valley of the Côney tributary Falvinfoing , which is fed by two source streams that rise in the southeast of the municipality. Three ponds were dammed in its course: the Étang de Falvingfoing , the Étang des Harnigaises and the Étang de Tremeurs . With a length of 700 meters and a width of up to 250 meters, the latter is the largest of the ponds that were built to reliably power the previously existing mills, but it already belongs to the neighboring municipality of Bains-les-Bains. The Canal des Vosges runs west of Trémonzey .

Forests cover around 60% of the municipality, especially in the higher elevations in the east and south. Most of them belong to the Forêt Chanot . The agricultural land consists of roughly equal parts of arable land and pasture land.

The districts of Le Saunier and Les Trémeurs belong to Trémonzey .

Neighboring municipalities of Trémonzey are Bains-les-Bains in the north, Le Clerjus in the east, Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont in the southeast and Fontenoy-le-Château in the south and west.

history

The name Trémonzey (1526 Trimansey ) means three mountains and comes from an old Lorraine dialect. The place was long in the area of the Terres surséance , which has been claimed for centuries by the County of Burgundy and the Duchy of Lorraine . From 1508 on, there were several contracts to belong to the area. It was not until the Treaty of Besançon between Louis XIV and Duke Leopold of Lorraine , signed on August 25, 1704, that the border was finally determined. Trémonzey came to Lorraine with a few other villages, while Fougerolles became French.

The history of the place is closely linked to metalworking in the Côney Valley. In addition to wire production in various forges in the neighboring municipality of Fontenoy-le-Château, nail manufacture was added from 1830 on, which Trémonzey specialized in. Numerous innovations and automation processes already led to a daily production of 200 kg nails and thorns per worker in 1847. In 1914 the wire drawing shop had 80 employees. The former royal iron nail manufacture produced 500 tons of nails. In 1872, the Moulin aux Bois , an old blacksmith's shop, was also converted into a nail factory. The industry led to some prosperity in the community for over a century. In 1980 the tradition ended with the closure of the Moulin aux Bois.

Population development

The population of Trémonzey has remained constant since the 1960s. During the heyday of the metal industry in the 1860s, the community had more than 900 residents.
