geography

The small town of Docelles is between Épinal and Gérardmer in the western foothills of the Vosges .

Location of the town of Docelles in the Vosges department

The municipality of Docelles includes part of the lower Volognetal , which is up to 1500 meters wide here at the mouth of the tributary Barba , as well as the mountain ridges north and south of the Volognetal, which reach up to 630 meters above sea level. The lower areas of the 8.74 km² community area are characterized by residential and commercial areas as well as agricultural areas. On the mountain slopes up to 450 meters above sea level there is pastureland, while the upper layers are covered by contiguous forests (the Forêt de Fossard extends in the south to the town of Remiremont ).

Neighboring municipalities of Docelles are Le Roulier in the north, Deycimont in the northeast, La Neuveville-devant-Lépanges and Faucompierres in the east, Xamontarupt in the southeast and south and Cheniménil in the west.

history

The wooded surroundings and the hydropower of the Vologne were the main prerequisites for a wood and paper industry that has a long tradition in Docelles. Instead of an old water mill, there is a paper mill that still exists today and that shapes the townscape.

In Docelles, the first vellum paper was made in Claude Krantz's paper mill in the 18th century .

Economy and Infrastructure

Docelles is an industrial community. The largest employer in town until January 2014 was the now closed paper mill ( Papeteries de Docelles ), which belonged to the UPM Kymmene group. Other Docelles-based operations include a paper processing company and a sawmill. In addition, seven farms are located in Docelles (vegetable growing, cattle breeding).

As a small center for the surrounding communities, numerous craft, trade and service companies as well as doctors have settled in Docelles. Docelles is also a primary school location.

The trunk road D 11 ( Épinal - Le Tholy ) leads past Docelles as a northern bypass. The Cheniménil-Docelles stop on the Arches-Saint-Dié railway line operated by TER Lorraine is located on the western border of the municipality of Cheniménil .
