Harol is a French commune with 628 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipal association Mirecourt Dompaire .

geography

The municipality of Harol is located on the gently rolling high plateau of the Vôge , about 20 kilometers west of Épinal in southern Lorraine. A special feature is the North Sea-Mediterranean watershed , which runs through the middle of the 27.34 km² municipal area. Harol consists of several villages and hamlets. While the district of La Rue is located on the Illon, which drains over the Madon and Moselle to the Rhine , rainfall flows in the districts of Harol, Le Ménil and Puttegney as well as the hamlets of Frison, La Fosse, Le Fleuriot and Saucenot via the Ruisseau de Reblangotte , Côney and Saône to the Rhône . The district of Longeroye between the sources of Illon and Reblangotte lies exactly on the watershed. The formerly separate villages of Harol, Longeroye and Le Ménil have now grown together to form an almost continuous long settlement.

The height differences in the municipality are small and only become more apparent in the north of the municipality. The largest part of the community area consists of agricultural land. Only at the municipal boundaries in the west and south ( Forêt du Ban d'Harol ) does the municipality have shares in forest areas, which together make up about 15% of the entire area.

Harol's neighboring communities are Damas-et-Bettegney in the north, Dommartin-aux-Bois in the east, Charmois-l'Orgueilleux in the south, Escles in the southwest and Ville-sur-Illon in the west.

history

The village of Harol was first mentioned as Haros in 1070 . It was later the center of the extended ban of Harol ( Ban d'Harol ). Although the area was under the influence of the diocese of Toul , it was demonstrably dependent on the chapter in Remiremont since 1235 .

The Saint-Èvre church was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and rebuilt in 1765 in the shape characteristic of the 18th century in southern Lorraine with a large nave.

After the French Revolution, the municipality (still with the spelling Harot in 1801 ) first belonged to the canton of Escles, then to the canton of Darney, and finally from 1833 to the canton of Dompaire .
