geography

The municipality of Sanchey, with 939 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), is seven kilometers west of Épinal .

Location of the municipality of Sanchey in the Vosges department

The five and a half square kilometer municipal area of Sanchey comprises a valley section of the Moselle tributary Avière including the eastern part of the Bouzey reservoir . In the south-west the terrain rises and reaches 461 meters above sea level on the border with the municipality of Renauvoid . The Canal des Vosges runs through the municipality in apex position at about 350 meters above sea level. The southeast of the municipal area is part of the forest area Forêt de Ban d'Uxegney . The agricultural land is limited to almost 100 hectares.

The settlement area of the community is extensive and characterized by single-family houses. There is no visible old town center and no church. The old hamlets existing in the municipality, to which the district Bouzey belongs, have grown together due to constant influx from the Épinal area. In the process, a settlement axis has developed in a west-east direction, which extends along the north bank of the Bouzey reservoir to the neighboring municipality of Chaumousey. The north-east bank of the reservoir - now a local recreation center - and both banks of the Canal des Vosges are among the sought-after residential areas.

Neighboring municipalities of Sanchey are Darnieulles and Uxegney in the north, Les Forges in the east, Renauvoid in the south and Chaumousey in the west.

history

Wall of the Bouzey reservoir

A striking date in the history of the municipality of Sanchey is April 27, 1895. On this day, the dam of the Bouzey reservoir broke , which was filled to around 8 million cubic meters after a flood. The avalanche of water and mud devastated everything on its way down the Avière to its confluence with the Moselle. The lower-lying parts of the communities of Chaumousey and Sanchey directly below the dam were particularly affected . The disaster claimed 86 lives. In 1900 the dam was renewed, initially with a 15 meter high crown. Between 1930 and 1939 it was renovated again, the now 17 meter high dam wall still exists today.

Away

The Fort Férinot even battery de Sanchey called, is located 380 meters above the sea on a wooded hill in the eastern part of the municipality of Sanchey. The fortification was supposed to secure the defense of the road from Épinal to Darney . Construction of the fort began in 1881, and it was continuously expanded and expanded in the years up to 1917. The crew consisted of up to 200 men. The fort, which survived the world wars without damage, is in relatively good condition and today belongs to the community.
