The Altes Schleifer Teichgelände nature reserve is located in the municipality of Runde in the Saxon district of Görlitz . It bears the NSG identification D 85. The area between loop and Trebendorf has been under nature protection since 1981 . It is part of the Muskauer Heide and is characterized by mixed deciduous and coniferous forests and wet meadows . The Struga flows through the nature reserve.

The FFH area Altes Schleifer Teichgelände has also existed since 2002 (ID DE-4453-301). The FFH area is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . It has a slightly different layout than the nature reserve: on the one hand it is larger than the NSG, on the other hand it does not cover the entire NSG. However, the core area of both areas is identical.

Area description

The area lies on the Cottbus – Görlitz railway line at the foot of the Trebendorfer plateau. This area has been known to have been used since the 13th century. The forests were used for beekeeping and logging or, after clearing, they were used as meadows for agriculture. In the meantime, former ponds such as the large pond and the small pond, the Studźonkteich, were created in the wetland for fish farming.

Field names indicate the nature and use of the legendary cultural landscape. Knowledge of the species-rich flora and fauna exists through the writings of Johann Hano-Hantscho . He wrote down a large part of the Schleifer world of legends. Many incidents from his literature play out in the large pond area. The meaning of the Sorbian name of Loop, Slepo , was also traced back to the pond area. Accordingly, Slepo derives from slip 'mumbling, smacking'. This sound can be heard when walking across a wet meadow.

Since 1867 (Gustav-Adolf pit), this area was influenced by coal mining, from 1962 to 1969 mainly by the Trebendorfer Felder opencast mine and since 1969 by the Nochten opencast mine . Due to the intensive use in agriculture and the amelioration, the flora was affected by the fall of 1989. The Struga was still an industrial effluents leading stinking trickle. In the summer of 1981 the large and small ponds were declared a nature reserve. It has been an FFH area since 2002. A nature trail was set up in 2006.
