The Rotstein ( Upper Sorbian Hrodźišćo = " Schanze ") is a mountain range in the district of Görlitz , which is named after its highest mountain.

Location and surroundings

It is located east of the town of Löbau and is surrounded by the towns of Bischdorf , Dolgowitz , Sohland am Rotstein , Zoblitz and Rosenhain . North of the Rotstein between Löbau and Reichenbach / OL run the federal highway 6 and the Dresden – Görlitz railway line . The border between the Lower Silesian Upper Lusatia and the Löbau-Zittau district once ran along the ridge .

Red stone massif in the evening sun

The most striking summit of the massif is the 455 m high Rotstein . This is followed by the 421 m high Hengstberg , which takes up the entire middle and right part of the massif. Behind this - viewed from the air like a horseshoe - is the Georgenberg . The remains of a small chapel from the 11th century can be found on the top.

In addition, there are remains of a late Slavic-early German fortification built as a double wall on the southeastern crest of the Rotstein . The name of the mountain is derived from this hill (hrodźišćo) .

Observation tower

At the end of October 2000 a new iron lookout tower was inaugurated. The tower is 21 m high and has 101 steps.

Nature reserve

The Rotstein as one of the oldest nature reserves in Saxony (oldest nature reserve in Upper Lusatia) was placed under nature protection as early as 1912. With around 530, often rare, plant species, it is the most species-rich mountain in Upper Lusatia . Typical include: liverwort , daphne , forest commemorative , silver fir , high cowslip , turkish lily , yew , meadow vignaceous and arum .
