The Schönbrunner Berg is a 427 meter high mountain in the eastern Lausitzer Bergland in the Free State of Saxony . It is located south of the eponymous town of Schönbrunn in Upper Lusatia and forms the botanically interesting western part of the Upper Forest .

history

Until 1910, the mountain and the entire Oberwald belonged to the Großhennersdorfer forest district , but was then combined with the forests around Rennersdorf and Berthelsdorf to form the university district. From 1952 the forest was under the state forestry enterprise Löbau. The mountain was placed under nature protection in 1961 due to its biodiversity and some rare species.

Flora and fauna

The mountain is covered by a species-rich mixed deciduous forest, the predominant type of tree layer is the common beech , but there are also sycamore maple , sycamore elm , common ash , Norway maple and common spruce . Common golden nettles , woodruff , wood anemones , spotted arum , single-flowered pearl grass and many other sub-Mediterranean, sub-Atlantic and central European species thrive on the nutrient-rich soils .

The basalt summit of the mountain has predominantly natural and structurally rich woodruff beech forest with numerous early bloomers such as cave and middle larkspur, ringelkraut and woodruff. The summit with its block heap is covered by ash-maple- Schatthangwald , typical mosses and lichens grow here. In addition, there are oak-hornbeam forests and pre-forests made up of pioneer trees (especially silver birch). In addition, there is also spruce and larch afforestation on the mountain.

The wild garlic , which has its only place of discovery in the entire Upper Lusatia, is a specialty . Another rarity is the purple stendelwort , which is rarely found in Germany.

Occurrences of black woodpecker , stock dove and wood warbler are documented.

Protected areas

The Schönbrunner Berg is part of the fauna and flora habitat area " Basalt and Phonolithkuppen der Eastern Oberlausitz " as well as the nature reserve "Schönbrunner Berg". It has also been protected as a national natural heritage with 129 hectares since 2015 .
