The Schlechteberg in Ebersbach is a mountain in the Lausitzer Bergland in the district of Görlitz with a height of 485  m above sea level. NHN . The mountain, like the nearby Kottmar and Löbauer Berg, is an extinct volcano of tertiary volcanism. The name of the mountain allows several interpretations. The derivation of Middle High German sleht = flat would indicate an external characteristic.

The mountain can be reached via an access road from the federal highway 96 to the large-scale parking lot at the water house near the hilltop. The village of Spreedorf extends along the Spree on the German-Czech border at the southern and western foot . Since 1957 the Schlechteberg has been considered a local recreation area by a council resolution.

geology

The mixed forest planted Schlechteberg with its surrounding grassland rises geographically in the middle of the residential area of Ebersbach at the western end of the threshold between the two main spring arms of the Spree. Its ridge line stretches from northwest to southeast and thus follows a broad corridor of nepheline basanite , the blocks of which cover the three steep slopes of the Schlechteberg. The corridor, on the other hand, is enveloped by deeply decomposed granodiorite almost up to the summit . Under the fields adjoining the mountain to the east and under the sports field, which was built in 1925, there are smaller deposits of basalt hidden hard under the surface, but these are only thin and partly accompanied by tuff. All these basalts belong to the outer edge of the basalt coverings of Neugersdorf-Leutersdorf.

Numerous Nordic debris can be found in the Pleistocene meltwater deposits on the lower slopes, while they are absent on the mountain at higher altitudes. The associated sand deposits were extracted in numerous sand pits until the 20th century. Kiesdorf, a so-called small settlement according to the vernacular, was built on the site of the former community sand pits. Remains of a terrace indicate an older valley floor of the Oberspree about 20 meters above the valley floor. Before the construction of the local water supply, the spring horizon on the mountainside supplied the farms below and the nearby train station. The elevated tanks of the Ebersbach water pipeline have been located on the slope of the Schlechteberg since 1913.

Flora and fauna

The pure spruce stands that have been common in the forest since the 19th century have largely been replaced by mixed forests. A species-rich world of small birds lives in it today. The Ebersbacher Humboldtverein has been campaigning for practical bird protection in the area since 1868. He published various lists of fauna and flora in the area in his commemorative publications . A comparison with the flora lists published in 1886 and 1911 reveals considerable losses in the flora, including most of the local basalt flora and all orchids . In addition, since 1941 the small balsam ( Impatiens parvijtora ) has overgrown lower representatives of the lowest plant layer . In terms of local climates , the contrast between the warm, dry locations on the south side of the Schlechteberg and its cool, moist northern slope is striking, and this is not only reflected in the vegetation. The phenological time differences for the start of snowmelt of 8 or more days are also noticeable. For deep-drawing thunderstorms, the ridge of the Schlechteberg is often a local weather divide.

Attractions

Near the hilltop there is an alpine garden laid out in 1912 and the Humboldtbaude with a local history museum, built in the same year, and a lookout tower since 1998. A ski slope and drag lift, which was built in 1970 by the winter sports section, extends over the entire north slope.

Humboldtbaude

The hut with mountain restaurant was built in 1912 by the former Humboldtverein Ebersbach in order to create an accommodation for its scientific collections. In 1861, at the suggestion of Emil Adolf Rossmässler from Leipzig, several villagers came together in this association, initially to acquire scientific knowledge in the spirit of Alexander von Humboldt and later to spread it further. In addition, they soon turned to other charitable tasks, including the activity of the mountain association. In addition to the documents in the museum, the articles in the festival publications from 1886, 1911 and 1938 testify to the company's own scientific research. The Ebersbach Local History Museum in the Humboldtbaude houses the collection not only for the urban area of Ebersbach, but also for the surrounding landscape. The focus is on specimens from the fields of zoology, botany, geology, prehistory and early history, local and regional history and folklore. The local history museum owes its scientific reputation to the collections of two Ebersbach lay researchers: August Weise (1833–1910) and Hermann Andert (1879–1945). In addition to significant evidence of the surrounding landscape, the museum also contains originals of unique international specialist value (e.g. fossils from the Upper Cretaceous). The redesign after the Second World War came about under Werner Andert , who has been running the museum on a voluntary basis since 1946. The collection that existed up to 2011 can be given as around 100,000 objects. When the towns of Ebersbach and Neugersdorf were merged in 2011, the museum received the collections of the former "Natural Science Association of Gersdorf", which was founded in 1866. The collections, documentation and chronicles he created formed the cornerstone for the foundation of the Neugersdorf municipal museum in 1932. The mountain restaurant on the ground floor is closed.

former observation tower

Immediately below the Humboldtbaude is the approx. 2500 square meter plant garden . Originally it only contained representatives of the high mountain flora, but then other ornamental plants were also added. A memorial stone in the plant garden, inaugurated in 1948, commemorates Hermann Andert, under whose care the Humboldtbaude and the plant garden were created. His scientific research in the field of paleontology is valued by international experts to this day.

From 1946 friends of the Humboldt Group Ebersbach of the Kulturbund der DDR and then from 1993 members of the NABU-Kreisverband Löbau eV looked after this facility in their spare time. Increasing private worries and events in the life of the voluntarily committed nature lovers as well as the wanderlust that arose in the post-reunification period gradually brought the commitment to the Schlechteberg to a standstill.

Since 2016, the local trade association has been working with the city administration to counteract the impending decline of the Humboldtbaude and the adjacent plant garden. Numerous activities and well-attended celebrations on the local mountain of the city of Ebersbach-Neugersdorf awaken memories and bring back a sense of home that has been lost over time. The city of Ebersbach-Neugersdorf is looking for a serious investor who can give this historic place a future.

Observation tower

The 22 m high observation tower with 108 steps was inaugurated on May 2, 1998. The view to the east and south from the Giant Mountains (with the Schneekoppe ) over the Jizera Mountains , Jeschken , Zittau Mountains , the foothills of the Bohemian Central Mountains to the distant heights of the Eastern Ore Mountains is impressive . After the tower had been closed for a long time due to necessary renovation measures, it was demolished in January 2020.
