The Hochstein ( Upper Sorbian Rubježny hród ) is 533.1  m above sea level. NHN high mountain near Kleindehsa in the municipality of Lawalde in the Saxon district of Görlitz . It is the easternmost elevation of the Czornebohkette in the Oberlausitzer Bergland .

On the summit cliffs, which are protected as natural monuments, the two-mica granodiorite from which the mountain is made can be seen.

Rampart

A prehistoric rampart surrounds the up to 10 m high cliffs. In 1841, Karl Benjamin Preusker suspected a pagan sacrificial site in the ramparts . Archaeological investigations around 1900 revealed a Slavic or medieval use. The question of the function of the system could not be clarified. Around 1350 the rocks are said to have served as a hiding place for a band of robbers, which is why the place was also called a robbery castle on old maps and is still called that in Sorbian today.

Hiking trails

The ridge trail leads from Kleindehsa to Großpostwitz , it is marked with the hiking trail "Blauer Punkt". It represents a section of the long-distance hiking trail " Hiking Trail of German Unity " from Görlitz to Aachen .

The war route runs south of the summit ; it was given this name during the Seven Years' War after Austrian troops crossed the ridge on the night of October 14, 1758 to attack the Prussians in the Battle of Hochkirch .

A hiking trail on the southern slope of the Hochstein from Halbau bears the name Polenzweg in memory of the poet Wilhelm von Polenz , whose favorite mountain the Hochstein is said to have been.
