Waymarks

The hiking trail of German unity is a long-distance hiking trail within Germany . It leads from the easternmost German city of Görlitz to the westernmost German city of Aachen . It has a length of approx. 1,080 km. A separate route and route were dispensed with. Only in this way was it possible to realize this hiking trail in a short time. The existing long-distance, main and long-distance hiking trails of the participating hiking clubs are used along the entire route. In the area of the Eifelverein, for example, on sections of the coronation path (Aachen - Bonn). From Bad Godesberg to Aachen, the hiking trail of German unity is identical to the European long-distance hiking trail E8 (Ireland - Black Sea). Except for occasional signs, there is no continuous marking. The markings of the regional routes are sufficient as a hiking trail that is only described (see literature).

history

The trail arose from an idea of the Lions Club Meinerzhagen - Kierspe with hiking friends from Saxony , who met for a convivial round in 1990 in front of a hiking hut near Meißen . The specialty is that the majority of the major long-distance hiking trails run from north to south. However, as a sign of German unity, this should be a hiking trail from east to west. In the further course of the 1990s, the concept was implemented, the route was written down on existing hiking trails and the overall supervision was delegated to the Sauerland Mountain Association .
