About this picture

Lawalde ( Upper Sorbian Lěwałd ) is a Saxon municipality in the district of Görlitz .

Geography and traffic

The municipality of Lawalde is located in the central part of the district. It is located around 5 km southwest of Löbau in the middle of the " Oberlausitzer Bergland " nature reserve . The highest elevations in the municipality are the Hochstein (542 m) and the Kötzschauer Berg (466 m). The B 178 runs east of the community. The Laubaer Wasser , a tributary of the Litte, flows through the village .

history

Lawalde was created by the settlers as a Waldhufendorf (with manor blocks). It was first mentioned in a document by Friedrich (Frisco) von Lewenwalde , locator and namesake of the village, from 1290 . Kleindehsa was first mentioned in a document in 1242 in a sales document. The Sleiffe brothers from Görlitz are named as the new owners of Lawalde in 1423. Towards the end of the 15th century, Lawalder farmers had to pay 9.5 marks in interest and 25 bushels each of wheat and grain to the then Oppach landlord. In 1495 the city of Löbau bought the place for 600 shock groschen. After the Upper Lusatian Pönfall in 1547, noble landlords took over Lawalde. In 1609 two manors Nieder- and Oberlawalde were formed at the expense of bought farmers, which were reunited in 1723 by Carl Gottlob von Ponickau. In a chronicle he is reported: "He was a sharp and angry gentleman who arbitrarily increased the court services very much." In 1752 the whole place was bought by an Obercunnersdorfer canvas factor, whose two sons (Löbauer canvas merchants with busy overseas contacts) were bought by the father Lawalder goods received in 1772. In 1853 Lawalde became a rural community through the union of Nieder- u. Oberlawalde. From 1939 to 1945 Lauba was incorporated (excluding the Neulauba district, which was incorporated into Beiersdorf).

On March 1, 1994, as part of the Saxon municipal reform, the municipalities of Kleindehsa and Lauba were incorporated into Lawalde.
