geography

The municipality of Groß Düben is located in the northern part of the district in a wooded area on the northwestern edge of the Muskauer Heide . It is located seven kilometers northwest of Weißwasser and 14 kilometers east of Spremberg . The federal highway 156 , which connects these two cities, runs along the northern municipal boundary. The now disused railway line Weißwasser – Forst runs through the community .

The place Groß Düben protrudes, similar to a headland, into the Brandenburg district of Spree-Neisse (SPN). 3.5 kilometers east of Groß Düben is Klein Düben , three kilometers west is Lieskau . The border between Upper Lusatia and Lower Lusatia also runs along this municipal, district and state border .

Surrounding communities

In the north, the community of Felixsee borders on Groß Düben. This is followed in a clockwise direction: Tschernitz (NE), Jämlitz-Klein Düben (O), Gablenz (O), Weißwasser (S), Trebendorf (SW), Runde (W) and Spremberg (NW).

history

For the history of Halbendorf see Halbendorf # history .

The area was settled as early as the Bronze Age , as archaeological finds show. The repopulation falls in the time of the second German settlement in the east . The oldest written mention of Groß Dübens so far was in 1464 in the land registry of the Muskau district .

The name "Düben" is derived directly from the Upper Sorbian name Dźěwin , the name addition serves to distinguish it from the neighboring Klein Düben ( Lower Sorbian Źěwink with the suffix -k). Name researchers are not sure about the origin of the name. The name can be derived from a personal name ("place of a Děva") or from 'děva' (virgin) or 'dźowka' (daughter).

During the Thirty Years' War , the manor palace in Groß Düben was destroyed. In 1836 Groß Düben received a school.

In 1995, Groß Düben was a founding member of the Loop Administrative Community and merged with the Halbendorf community on January 1, 1999.

In March 2009 the local council of Halbendorf presented a letter in a local council meeting, in which the will is expressed to be umgemeindet from Groß Düben to the neighboring loop. For Groß Düben, this step would most likely mean the loss of independence, as the town with around 650 inhabitants is only slightly larger than Saxony's smallest community Kurort Rathen and the number of independent communities with less than 1000 inhabitants in Saxony has fallen to below 10 since the reunification of Germany . In a referendum on March 25, 2012, the majority voted for the earliest possible incorporation after loop.

Population and language

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 302 in the 1880s, including 292 Sorbs (97%) and ten Germans. In 1956, Ernst Tschernik still had a Sorbian-speaking population of 56.7%. Since then, the number of Sorbian speakers has continued to decline significantly.
