Except in the center of Krauschwitz and Sagar, the telephone code is 035775.

history

Krauschwitz was first mentioned as Kruswica in 1400 in the Bautzen council files , the neighboring town of Keula was documented as early as 1268. The name Krauschwitz comes from Sorbian and means "pear village". In 1771 the first school was founded. A forest fire in 1775 almost completely destroyed the place. With the construction of the Prussian state road (today's federal road 115 ) from Görlitz to Cottbus in 1830, the community was connected to the national transport network. In 1938 the former towns of Krauschwitz and Keula were combined to form the Krauschwitz community. Keula was bigger at that time, Krauschwitz was the better known place for its ceramic products.

On January 1, 1994, the communities of Klein Priebus (with the districts Podrosche and Werdeck), Pechern, Sagar and Skerbersdorf merged with Krauschwitz. On June 17, 2005 the world record was set in the middle school of Krauschwitz in backward running as a mass relay over 1,000 × 100 m and 100 × 200 m for men and 100 × 200 m for women.

By decision of June 7, 2017, the Görlitz District Office approved the addition of the municipality name at the request of the municipality. The official name of the community is now "Krauschwitz id OL"

Due to the poor financial situation of the Krauschwitz community, a merger with Bad Muskau was sought. On November 11, 2018, the majority voted against the draft of the unification agreement in a referendum.

Population and language

Krauschwitz had a Sorbian-speaking majority of the population until the beginning of the 20th century. For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 258 in the 1880s, including 222 Sorbs (86%) and 36 Germans. The language change took place in the course of rapid industrialization mainly in the first half of the 20th century. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking population of only 3.7% or a total of 119 speakers.

politics

mayor

  • Gerd Slabke
  • Frank Stupka (until 2005)
  • Rüdiger Mönch (2005-2020)
Mönch was re-elected in June 2012, but the district of Görlitz declared the election to be invalid. In February 2013, the election was repeated and Mönch received the citizens' trust again. However, since he continued the office in June 2012, this date was considered the beginning of the 7-year term of office, which led to irritation towards the end. Mönch did not run again.
  • Tristan Mühl was elected the new mayor of the Krauschwitz community on November 24, 2019 by the voters in the first ballot. He took office in early February 2020.

coat of arms

The coat of arms is based on the colors of Upper Lusatia with blue and yellow. There are three pears in the upper part, which refer to the Sorbian name Krušwica 'Birnendorf'. The anvil and hammer in the lower part symbolize the iron smelting, which laid the foundation stone for the founding of Keulas.

Community partnerships

Krauschwitz maintains three partnerships, with Przewóz (German Priebus ) on the opposite bank of the Neisse , with the Black Forest community of Ottersweier and, since 2011, with the Hungarian community of Szűcsi , which is located on the southwestern edge of the Mátra Mountains .

The partnership with Ottersweier came about in 1989, when the Krauschwitz community defense chief wrote a letter to the West German community with the same zip code, 7583, during the fall of the Wall. This was soon followed by mutual visits and in 2003 a circle of friends was founded. “After 18 years of wild marriage” a partnership agreement was signed on October 4, 2007.

The partnership with Przewóz has existed since April 30, 2004, after the congregations have been celebrating a day of German-Polish encounter on April 30 since 1995. The partnership is being deepened with the volunteer fire brigades and, since 2007, with the day-care centers. For the latter, it was agreed, among other things, that the other language should be taught as the language of encounter.

economy

Barbaraturm in Krauschwitz, former Keulahütte water tower

The pre-industrial development began in Krauschwitz in 1440 with the installation of the iron hammer at Keula , one of the oldest iron foundries in Germany and the cornerstone of what would later become the Keulahütte . In 1878, the entrepreneur and inventor Ludwig Rohrmann bought a crockery pottery in Krauschwitz and expanded it into a large ceramic manufacturer, which after two mergers in 1902 and 1904 was a location of the Deutsche Ton- und Steinzeugwerke AG .

Before the fall of the Wall , Krauschwitz was a municipality that was heavily influenced by industry. The largest employers in the municipality are currently Keulahütte Krauschwitz GmbH (part of the von Roll hydro group since 2017), Kreisel Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co.KG, Tischlerei Drogoin GmbH, Tief- und Landeskulturbau GmbH Nadebor and Ostsächsische Dienstleistungs- und Service GmbH ( ODS).

traffic

The B 115 and the B 156 cross in the municipality . State roads 123, 126, 127 and 127b also run through Krauschwitz. The border crossing to Poland, opened in 2011, provides a connection to Łęknica and the Polish state road 12 . North of the municipality is the Bad Muskau – Łęknica border crossing and the Podrosche – Przewóz border crossing opened in 1994 in the southern municipality .

The Muskau forest railway (600 mm gauge) runs through Krauschwitz on its way between Weißwasser and Bad Muskau. The Weißwasser – Bad Muskau railway line, which used to run through Krauschwitz , has now been partially dismantled.

Sights and leisure facilities

A year-round pool, the Krauschwitz adventure world with a large sauna area, offers relaxation for children and adults. In the Skerbersdorf leisure center you can also use the small outdoor pool for refreshment in summer. The Sagar Museum provides information about the history of the region . There are also several scrap wood houses .

The cultural monuments are recorded in the list of cultural monuments in Krauschwitz (Saxony) .

In Krauschwitz there is an oak with a chest height of 7.75 m (2016).

On September 1st, the peace bell cast in the Keulahütte will be rung for World Peace Day.
