Walk backwards
Running backwards is a trend in running to run backwards over longer distances. Distances of several kilometers and relay races are now being held in competitions.
history
The idea of running backwards as a sport has been around for a long time. This figure skating was mentioned for the first time in 1826. The French Christian Grollé, who has been involved with this type of running since 1978, and Roland Wegner, who has been promoting the sport under the name "Retrorunning" since 2001 and who has published a book of the same name (Spomedis publishing house), are considered pioneers in retro-running . In 1992, the first reverse competition in Europe took place in Poviglio / Italy. There are now backwards runs in Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, New Zealand, North and South America, India and South Africa. In 2005, on the initiative of pioneer Roland Wegner, the Association International Retro Runner (IRR) was founded with representatives from Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland with the aim of holding international championships.
description
The athletes run with their heels and back first while looking “backwards”. In athletics training, but also in other sports, retro running is used as a means of coordination. Running backwards improves coordination, balance and posture in a short time and can therefore also contribute to more self-confidence. For competitive athletes it is considered injury prophylaxis. In American sports science, it is viewed as an unconventional rehab tool after operations on cruciate ligaments or Achilles tendons . A disadvantage is that the eyes are incorrectly positioned, which requires greater concentration.
advantages
Due to the reversed sequence of movements, the muscles and joints are stressed differently. This creates advantages such as higher energy expenditure and avoidance of imbalances in the muscles. The senses are sharpened and you get a better body feeling.
