Thomas Dold (born September 10, 1984 in Wolfach ) is a former German athlete who was best known as a stair runner . In addition, he set several world records for running backwards in his career .

Career

Before Dold became a stair runner, he was a member of the German national mountain running team . Dold achieved success at the most prestigious stair run in the world, the Empire State Building Run-Up in New York . When he participated for the first time in 2005, he was able to take second place after Rudolf Reitberger after the photo finish . In the following year he won the competition for the first time, beating the previous year's winner. On February 6, 2007, Dold successfully defended his title on his third participation in the flight of stairs in what was once the tallest building in the world. In February 2008 he completed the run in a personal best of 10:08 minutes, won for the third time in a row and thus managed a hat trick , but he could not endanger the record of the Australian Paul Crake of 9:33 minutes. Also in 2009, 2010 and 2011 Dold was able to win the run-up and has won the event six times in a row.

On June 15, 2008, Thomas Dold won the flight of 2046 steps to the 91st floor of Taipei 101 , which at that time was still the tallest skyscraper in the world. It took him 10:53 minutes. He repeated this success in 2009, in 2010 he was third, but again first in 2011.

Twice in a row, in 2009 and 2010, he won the Sydney Tower Run-Up. He also repeated his victories in Berlin at the Sky Run and the Vertical Sprint Milan in the Pirelli high-rise . All five races in 2010 are part of the Vertical World Circuit 2010 . Dold described the use of carefully appropriate support stockings as a secret of his success .

On August 3, 2013, he covered 330 hm in 9:55 minutes in the “China World Summit Hotel” in Beijing, thus winning 1st place. Thomas Dold was also among the world's best in backward running , known as retro running . His greatest success was winning two world championships each in 2006 in Rotkreuz / Switzerland and in 2008 in Pietrasanta in Italy . He has not appeared internationally since 2013.
