The municipality of Kottmar is a unified municipality in the south of the East Saxon district of Görlitz between Zittau and Löbau , which was created on January 1, 2013 from the merger of the three surrounding municipalities of the Kottmar mountain . Since there was no incorporation for the benefit of one of the parishes, the formation of a new parish under this name became necessary. The community is located in the district of Eibau and, with around 8,000 inhabitants, is the largest non-urban community in the district.

Geographical location

The community is located in the south of Upper Lusatia and partially forms a transition from the Upper Lusatian Bergland to the Eastern Upper Lusatia . It is centrally located between Löbau and Zittau. While the lowest point in Ottenhain at 295 m above sea level. NN, the highest point is on the local mountain, the Kottmar at 583 m above sea level. history

While the parts of the municipality in the north, such as Nieder- and Obercunnersdorf, were mentioned as Cunradisdorf as early as 1221 , and also the places Kottmarsdorf (1306 as Khotdmersdorpp ) and Ottenhain (1317 as Ottenhayn ) with a documentary mention at the beginning of the 14th century, the southern parts followed mentioned or founded later. Eibau, which was first mentioned as Kirchdorf in 1352, has existed for as long as Cunnersdorf, which was only divided into Nieder-, Neu- and Obercunnersdorf from around 1450. Walddorf ( Walddörfel ) did not receive a foundation permit from the Elector until 1691, new construction a little later, around 1714.

Mayor of the municipality of Kottmar is Michael Görke.

In the mayoral election on March 24, 2013, the former mayor of the municipality of Eibau prevailed with a majority of votes against Dolores Weidner, from Obercunnersdorf. Both are non-party.

While the turnout was 58.2%, 68.4% of the voters voted for Görke and 31.6% for his competitor Weidner.

In Kottmar there is a large selection of museums that illustrate the respective village history or report on the earlier work of linen weaving.
