Arthur Apelt (born August 25, 1907 in Eibau ; † 1993 ) was a German conductor and general music director .

Life

Apelt, born in the district of Mundgut (Hofesträucher), came from a simple background, his mother was a textile worker and his father worked in the Münch brewery . The banker was involved in the theater club of the Eibau gymnastics club and conducted concerts. The Oberlausitz men's choir Neugersdorf was also directed by him at this time.

After he had lost his job after Black Thursday 1929, Apelt took up a degree as a conductor in Dresden in order to turn his hobby into a profession. He then received his first engagements at stages in Göttingen, Aussig, Troppau, Gießen and finally in Wuppertal, where he rose from first conductor to opera director. In 1955 he followed a call as general music director of the Hessian State Theater Wiesbaden and succeeded Karl Elmendorff . Here he continued the merger of the municipal spa and symphony orchestra and the Staatskapelle, which had been started by his predecessors and which was successfully completed by Wolfgang Sawallisch, who reigned after him .

In 1958 Apelt moved to the State Opera in Berlin, where he worked for many years as general music director.

In accordance with his wishes, Apelt found his final resting place in his home town of Eibau in 1993.
