history

Niederottenhain Castle

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1317. In a certificate dated December 3, Margrave Woldemar von Brandenburg referred eight villages in the state of Görlitz , including “Ottenhayn” , to the court of the city of Löbau . In the 16th century Ottenhain belonged to the Gersdorf family, and at the end of the century it was sold to Heinrich von Miltitz. In 1610, Ottenhain bought Christoph von Gersdorff for 7,400 thalers . In the 17th century, the town, divided into Oberottenhain and Niederottenhain, changed hands several times. In 1798 Ottenhain was again divided into 2 towns and manors until 1853, when the town was united. In 1809, Johann Gottlieb Erdmann von Nostitz bought the Niederottenhain estate for 42,000 thalers . In 1842 a new school was built after the old one (now the school museum) was in extremely poor, cramped condition. From 1844 the road to Niedercunnersdorf was redesignated; it was the same "as in living memory". The castle-like mansion of Niederottenhain was built in 1862–63 by Christoph Ferdinand Sieland. In general, the manor Niederottenhain and its surroundings underwent most of the renovations and new buildings in the 19th century. In 1874 the Nieder watermill burned down for the second time. In 1890 Ottenhain had 533 inhabitants. In 1897 the upper mill burned down. The chapel was built in 1899. The last school was built in 1901 and 1906. From 1911 the place was electrified and supplied with electricity from Zittau . After the Second World War there were 122 resettlers in Ottenhain. The number of residents was 654 in 1946. The first LPG was set up in 1957, and at the beginning of the 1960s there were three cooperatives in Ottenhain. In 1973 Ottenhain had 598 inhabitants, 516 in 1984, 421 in 2013.

On January 1, 1999 Ottenhain was incorporated into Niedercunnersdorf. Since January 1, 2013 the place belongs to the municipality of Kottmar.
