The Kottmarsdorf post mill , also referred to in historical records after its former owners as "Burkmühle" or "Zimmermannmühle", is a windmill in the Kottmarsdorf district of the Saxon community of Kottmar . The mill, built in 1843, is the only one of the original three post mills that has survived in the village and is protected as a technical monument .

history

Windmill

State 1964

The mill was built on the 435-meter high mountain parish in southeast Kottmarsdorf in 1843 and with two grinding passes and two sifters equipped. It was used as a flour mill for exactly 100 years until 1943. In the following years, the building was left to decay, until in 1961 the association Natur- und Heimatfreunde Kottmarsdorf together with the municipality extensively renovated the windmill and made it accessible to the public as a display facility. After the fall of the Wall , the mill was restored and technically repaired again in 1990 , for example the 17-meter-long blades and the rotating beam were renewed. Another technical overhaul of the wings and the rotating mechanism took place in 2014.

Various events and demonstrations are held in and around the Kottmarsdorf post mill for the annual German Milling Day . In addition, the Kottmarsdorfer Mühlenfest is held every five years.

In October 2017, a wing of the mill was demolished as a result of the storm Xavier . This was replaced in April of the following year.

Miller's house

The miller's house next to the windmill originally served as a residential building for the master miller and his family. Since 1996 there has been a show bakery and a traditional oven . Several times a year there is a show baking in the miller's house.

In 1979, on the initiative of the Kottmarsdorfer Heimatverein, the crest wheel of the Hempelmühle in Schönbach was recovered when it was demolished and transported to Kottmarsdorf, where it is now on display next to the post mill. The Kammrad was probably built in 1752 by Christian Fröden in Großhennersdorf and is considered to be the oldest surviving mill drive wheel in Saxony. The wheel sits on a six meter long shaft, measures 2.90 meters in diameter and weighs around two tons.

Mill trail

The Kottmarsdorfer Mühlenrundweg, opened in July 2001, is an approximately 1.5 kilometer long hiking trail that connects the preserved windmill with the locations of the former mills, the so-called Samel and Döring mills. Various path stations have been set up between the mill locations, including a true-to-scale model of a post mill and miller's house, a half-timbered house , the cemetery of honor for fallen Russian soldiers and the Protestant church.

Others

On April 1, 2010, the Kottmarsdorf post mill was the focus of an April Fool's joke : An alleged amateur video was circulating on various Saxon news portals that showed the complete destruction of the mill by a tornado . The April Fool's joke was resolved the following day.
