The Jacobimarkt (colloquially Gierschdurfer Schiss'n ) in Neugersdorf is the largest annual festival in Upper Lusatia .

The Upper Lusatian dialect name "Gierschdurfer Schiss'n", in High German "Neugersdorfer Schießen", was given to the Jacobimarkt due to the royal shooting of the Neugersdorfer Schützen, which was formative for the Jacobimarkt with its customs from the beginning. The annual shooting festival included a fair , which became the largest folk festival in Upper Lusatia.

The Neugersdorfer Jacobimarkt takes place annually around the Jakobstag (Jacobustag) on July 25th. Over a period of 6 days (usually Friday to Wednesday), more than 200,000 visitors are now counted. Around 350 showmen and dealers are represented. The festival is still opened today with gunfire and there is a parade of the Neugersdorfer Schützengesellschaft. It ends with a fireworks display .

history

The Jacobimarkt began its almost 300-year history when, on May 22, 1728, the Privileged Shooting Society received its “confirmed shooting articles” from Prince Josef Wenzel von und zu Liechtenstein . This also meant that the administrator of the Princely Liechtenstein Patrimonial Court, Erbrichter Gottlich Hüttich, was granted market rights on the occasion of the respective royal shooting of the Neugersdorfer Schützengesellschaft. The city of Löbau was against this market being set up because it feared that it would damage its trade. However, the authority issued the approval on an input from the judge and customs collector. In the first few years the market was not very popular. In terms of area, however, it was getting bigger and bigger, so that more and more sellers and buyers came from near and far. Since 1749, standing fee was levied, of which the owner of the Wachtschenke had to pay a fifth to the shooting society and the local poor fund. In favorable years this amount was up to 800 marks.

The market developed from a pure dealer market and the "Schiss'n" to an entertainment and amusement meeting place.

The former industrial company on the Eiskellerberg was demolished in May 2006. In its place, a well-kept facility with a viewing platform was built, which is included in the "Gierschdurfer Schiss'n".
