Protected area

The Jonsdorf rock town is an important geological nature reserve, which is protected both as a nature reserve (NSG) and as part of the fauna-flora-habitat area (FFH) " High Altitudes of the Zittau Mountains". In addition, the area is designated as Zone 1 (quiet zone) of the Zittau Mountains Nature Park . The NSG has an area of 63.03 hectares and was established on September 11, 1967 by the GDR Agriculture Council by collective order, so there are no specific legal regulations. The FFH sub-area also includes the millstone quarries and includes habitat type 8220 in the rock city (silicate rocks with crevice vegetation). The area is also of great ornithological importance, therefore it is also designated as an eyrie protection zone for eagle owls and peregrine falcons and is therefore only accessible outside of the breeding season for a limited time.
