Oskar Friedrich

Oskar Oswald Friedrich (born October 16, 1832 in Markneukirchen , † January 14, 1915 in Dresden ) was a German educator and author . Friedrich was instrumental in developing the Zittau Mountains for tourism .

Live and act

Friedrich was born in Markneukirchen in 1832 as the son of a pharmacist. His mother died eight days after he was born; his father's death in 1842 made him an orphan at the age of ten . From 1846 to 1852 he attended grammar school in Zwickau , after which he studied mathematics and natural sciences at the University of Leipzig .

Teaching

After completing his doctorate in 1855/56, Friedrich took up the post of senior teacher at the Nikolaischule and, at the same time, a teaching post at the Teichmann Institute in Leipzig . Further stations of his teaching activities were secondary schools in Zwickau and Glauchau . From 1867 Friedrich worked at the grammar school in Zittau , initially as a teacher of mathematics and natural sciences. He was also responsible for the educational institution's natural history collections and gave public lectures. In 1876 he was appointed professor . From 1879 until his retirement, Friedrich was the vice-principal of the grammar school. His work Album des Gymnasium zu Zittau , written in 1886, is one of the standard literature in the city's school history. In addition to his teaching activities, he worked as the Royal Examination Commissioner. After his retirement in 1902, Friedrich moved to his son in Dresden.

Mountain Association Globus

In addition to his work at school, Friedrich was the chairman of the Globus mountain association. From 1877 this Zittau association was responsible for the development of the Zittau Mountains from a touristic, geological and scientific point of view. Under Friedrich's direction, the Scharfenstein was made accessible and viewing platforms were built on the potter near Oybin and the Koitsche near Hörnitz . On the high forest , the association first built a wooden observation tower and later, when it became dilapidated, the 25 meter high stone high forest tower. At the opening of the tower on September 14, 1892, Friedrich gave the official Weiherede.

Awards and honors

During the ceremony to mark the 300th anniversary of the Zittau grammar school on March 10, 1886, Friedrich was awarded the Albrechts Order of Knight First Class.

On August 31, 1898, a cliff in the Jonsdorfer Felsenstadt nature reserve was named Friedrichshöhe in his honor . On the so-called Friedrichsstein , a memorial plaque of the mountain association commemorates the achievements of Friedrich. The tablet bears the inscription:

The Zittau natural science association Globus has its first chairman Professor Dr. Friedrich, 1898. "

After his retirement in 1902, Friedrich was appointed Hofrat .

Together with Gustav Heppe from the Plagwitz Agricultural College and the Zwickau Association for the Dissemination of Good and Wohlfeiler Folk Writings , Friedrich published the two-volume work Sachsens Boden :
