The Koitsche (375 m above sea level ) is a wooded elevation on the southwestern outskirts of Hörnitz in the Lusatian highlands in Saxony . The name comes from Upper Sorbian chójca ( pine ).

Location and surroundings

The Koitsche is a destination near Zittau and just under seven kilometers from the city center. The Koitsche is surrounded east of Hörnitz, northeast of Mittelherwigsdorf , northwest of Hainewalde and south of Bertsdorf-Hörnitz . In the north, rising Scheibenberg .

geology

The mountain is made up of phonolite , which is in inclined slabs centimeter thick. The rock on the eastern slope of the mountain has been mined since the first half of the 19th century. Today the quarry is no longer in operation.

history

For the first time there was a so-called Schenkhaus here from 1833 to 1838, which later gave way to a refuge and was replaced in 1882 by the spacious restaurant above the quarry wall.

View from the Koitsche to Zittau

From the Koitsche, the view extends far over the panorama from Zittau to Hirschfelde and the Turów lignite mine and is considered the most beautiful view of Zittau from its surroundings.

Paths to the summit

The mountain restaurant on the top of the Koitsche , which also offers several rooms and apartments as a guesthouse, is easy to reach on foot and by car. From Zittau you can reach Koitsche via the B 96 and then state road 137 leading via Pethau and Hörnitz.
