The Scheibenberg , also Scheibenberg, is a 423 meter high mountain in Eastern Upper Lusatia in the Free State of Saxony . The district boundary between Mittelherwigsdorf and Bertsdorf-Hörnitz runs over the Scheibeberg, and that of Hainewalde on the western slope . The otherwise less prominent wooded mountain is characterized in the east by a large and widely visible quarry in which the eastern hilltop has already been dismantled.

description

The Scheibenberg stretches over a kilometer and a half on the right side over the Mandau valley . It is divided into three broad knolls, of which the northwestern (Rudolfshöhe) is the highest. At the highest point there is a carved sandstone block with the inscription "Rudolfs Höhe 1907". On the southern slope, the boundary stones marked "Z" and "A H" from the Berainung carried out in 1800 between the manor Althörnitz and the city of Zittau have been preserved. Below the quarry on the edge of the forest is the "Ursulastein" erected in memory of Maria Editha Ursula von Sandersleben with a view over the Mandau valley to Mittelherwigsdorf.

To the north is the Scheiber Spitzberg (406.2 m above sea level), to the west the Hutberg (378.3 m above sea level) and south of the Koitsche (375 m above sea level). The Breiteberg (510.1 m above sea level) rises to the southwest .

The Mandau flows around the Scheibenberg extensively in the west and north, and immediately in the east. On the section between the Spitzberg and the Butterberg (370 m above sea level) it forms the Roschertal in the north . The height difference to the river bed of the Mandau is 120 meters.

The Scheibeberg is surrounded by the northeast of Scheibe , east of Mittelherwigsdorf, southeast of Neuhörnitz, south of Kux, southwest of Charlottenruh, west of Hainewalde and northwest of Gampenstein.

construction

The Scheibeberg consists of two nepheline basanite ceilings separated by a tuff layer. There are more tuffs under the basanite. Nephelintephrite are locally embedded in the nepheline basanite. In the middle of the ridge there is a mighty phonolite dike. The upper tuff horizon at 340–350 m above sea level can be seen on the western and southern slopes.

On the formerly steep eastern slope above the road from Mittelherwigsdorf to Hörnitz, the nepheline tephrite stands in fine fissures. The stone slabs, which are arranged horizontally or vertically, depending on the direction of the fracture, simulate a columnar shape. Smaller areas consist of dark and solid basalt with little crevice. The close below the surface weathered sun burners tend to be Gekriech downhill. The Augit Tephrite slabs are mined in a quarry and processed into road gravel on site.

In 2004, a mineralization of the basalt fissures could be proven for the first time through the discovery of hyalite and thinnest-glued aragonite. In the upcoming area, aragonite, calcite and an unknown manganese mineral were found in autumn 2006.

flora

The Scheibeberg has a tall spruce forest; originally the mountain was overgrown with mixed deciduous forest, similar to the Roschertal and the school bush. Rough Trespe, Waldzwenke, ragwort, raspberry and spicy veal goiter spread over the fields. Ten species of orchids grow on the Scheibeberg, including the sword-leaved forest bird. At a small spring near the Mandau there is an occurrence of the giant horsetail on the east side of the mountain. Daphne was found in 1967 on the edge of the forest or halfway from Scheibe.

On the southern slope there are hedges and dry bush communities made of sloe, hawthorn, dog rose, field rose and red dogwood with occurrences of bear pods, wood pea, pea peas, vertebrate seaweed, tower herb, bristle bellflower, sparse elephant, lilac twigs, corn quail wheat and ball bellflower.

In the years 1928–1942, Oskar Mießler, master locksmith and hobby researcher from Zittau, recorded 400 species of flowering plants on an area of three km².

A 0.8 hectare forest on the Scheibeberg and an area of 2.6 hectares on the northwest slope are protected as area natural monuments.

Parts of the Scheibeberg together with the Roschertal formed the "Scheibeberg und Roschertal" landscape protection area . In 2005 it was integrated into the Mandautal landscape protection area . The area also belongs to the FFH area of the same name "Mandautal".

use

At the beginning of the 20th century, a small basalt quarry was built on the eastern slope . The entire eastern tip of the mountain has now been dismantled by the quarry. The dismantling takes place today in six excavation levels with a total excavation height of approx. 100 meters. The operator of the quarry is BWH Basaltwerk Mittelherwigsdorf GmbH & Co. KG.
