Run of the Mandau in the Roschertal

The Roschertal is a wooded section of the Mandau valley in Upper Lusatia, almost a kilometer long . It lies between the villages of Hainewalde and Scheibe and extends along the Mandau River .

In the area of the Roschertal, the Mandau has created a breakthrough valley that is flanked by 50 to 60 meter high wooded slopes. The valley breaks through both the basalt cover and the underlying tertiary tuff layer. While less steep terrace areas were formed on the level of the basalt tufa, in the basalt area there are much steeper block-strewn valley slopes. Essentially, the Roschertal is symmetrical with terraced steps at around 285 m, 315 m and 360 m above sea level. NN. Basalt blocks, but also completely unrolled sandstones from the Zittau Mountains and phonolite pebbles from the upper reaches of the Mandau can be found in the river bed of the Mandau . Occasionally there are also flints and some Nordic granites among them.

It is primarily due to the steep slope that the species-rich mixed deciduous forest escaped agricultural use. The potential natural vegetation of the slopes would largely consist of a typical woodruff beech forest , which can still be found here and there. On the lower slopes of the valley, the common oak-hornbeam forest is very well developed due to the powerful damming layers and favorable ground water supply.

Protected area

It was formerly part of the " Scheibeberg und Roschertal" landscape protection area , and in 2005 it was integrated into the Mandautal landscape protection area . The area also belongs to the FFH area of the same name "Mandautal". In the Roschertal you can find the FFH habitat types 9180 - ravine and mixed slope forests, 9130 - woodruff beech forests, 9170 - bedstraw oak-hornbeam forests, 6510 - lowland hay meadows and 3260 - flowing waters with underwater vegetation. The great mouse-eared mouse (Myotis myotis) occurs in the area as an FFH Annex II species . Two area natural monuments (FND) are located in the Roschertal, the FND "Forest area in the Roschertal" and the FND "Forest in the Roschertal".

Development

On the banks of the Mandau a path leads through largely untouched nature, in which also gray herons and kingfisher , rare plant species, etc. a. Ferns occur. There is a refuge roughly in the middle between the villages.

A relocation of the Hainewalde sewer pipeline, which was planned in 2000, was prevented by the construction of a pumping station above the Roschertal valley, and the sewer pipeline was subsequently laid along the district road between the towns.
