Nest protection zone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Germany, nest protection zones are designated areas to protect the nests ("clusters") of birds of prey and other large birds. The legal framework for designating the nest protection zones differs from state to state. In Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , the nature conservation laws contain their own paragraphs on the protection of nest sites and the designation of nest protection zones. In other federal states, such nests are protected as part of the general protection of habitats of specially and strictly protected animal and plant species (Section 10 (2 ) BNatSchG ).

Depending on the species to be protected and the local conditions, the sizes of the protection zones and the respective regulations are very different. Among other things, they can include entry bans, the ban on forest work or a ban on hunting. For example, in Brandenburg there are nest protection regulations for eagles, peregrine falcons , harriers , black storks , cranes and eagle owls . In a 100 m radius around the nests of these species, trees are felled, in a 300 m radius between February 1 and August 31, agricultural and forestry work using machines is prohibited, and construction and use are prohibited within a radius of 500 m hunting facilities prohibited. These prohibitions only apply to a limited extent for species that do not breed in the forest, such as the harriers and for eyries of cranes and ospreys in the field.
