Thiéfosse is a French commune with 593 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges and the Hautes Vosges municipal association .

geography

The municipality of Thiéfosse in the Vosges is 15 kilometers from Remiremont , in the south-east of Lorraine.

The 7.62 km² municipal area of Thiéfosse includes part of the central Moselle Valley, the valley of the Ruisseau du Droit de Thiéfosse flowing in from the east and the flanking mountain areas, which reach 800 meters in the east and up to 890 meters in the south-west. The 786 meter high saddle of the Col du Xiard in the west leads into the Moselle valley and is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. The Moselotte valley narrows to a gorge (Gorges du Crosery) at the border with the municipality of Basse-sur-le-Rupt.

The 430 meter high valley floor is not suitable for arable farming, so pasture farming predominates. Forêt Domaniale de Longegoutte takes up almost half of the municipality, but it is interrupted by numerous mountain farms and pastures.

The district of Les Mainqueyon to the north of the town belongs to Thiéfosse .

Neighboring municipalities of Thiéfosse are Basse-sur-le-Rupt in the north, Saulxures-sur-Moselotte in the east and south, Rupt-sur-Moselle in the south-west, Vecoux in the west and Vagney in the north-west.

history

The first part of the community name comes from a person Theotharius ; fosse is the French name for trench . The name developed from Tierfosse (1433, first mention) via Thiefot (1656) to today's Thiéfosse.

In 1701 the first chapel was built in the village. The suburb of Ban de Vagney, which had about 500 inhabitants at that time , belonged to the parish of Vagney . From 1795 Thiéfosse had its own pastor. A bell tower was added to the chapel in 1820 and the church was enlarged from 1851. The renovation was completed in 1854, so that in 2004 the 150th anniversary of the Catholic Church could be celebrated.

After the French Revolution, Thiéfosse stayed with Vagney for the time being. With the aim of becoming an independent municipality, the citizens submitted a petition in 1818. 17 years later, independence was achieved.

Like many municipalities in the Vosges, Thiéfosse grew rapidly from 1820 when the first spinning and weaving mills were founded. The long tradition of the textile industry ended in 2005 with the closure of the last local textile company.

Attractions

  • Saint-Antoine church, created from a chapel built in 1701
  • Gorges du Crosery (accessible to tourists with bridges)

Economy and Infrastructure

Eleven farms are located in the community (grain and potato cultivation, dairy farming, breeding of horses, cattle, sheep and goats). There are small craft, trade and construction companies in Thiéfosse. After the end of the textile industry, the municipality increasingly turned to tourism.

Départementstrasse 43 leads through Thiéfosse from Le Syndicat via Saulxures-sur-Moselotte and Ventron to Col d'Oderen on the border with the Alsace region . The former station building and the street name Route de la Gare are reminiscent of the disused railway line from Remiremont to Cornimont .
