Mairie Ban-de-Sapt

Ban-de-Sapt (1793 with the spelling Le Ban de Sapt , 1801 Baudesapt ) is a French commune with 348 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges and the canton of Raon-l'Étape .

geography

The municipality of Ban-de-Sapt is located in the Vosges , about twelve kilometers north-northeast of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges , the capital (chef-lieu) of the arrondissement of the same name. The 22.66 km² large, heavily forested municipal area extends in the northeast to a few hundred meters from the Vosges ridge, which here forms the border with the Bas-Rhin department . The largest village in the municipality of Ban-de-Sapt is Launois - here you will find the mayor's house ( Mairie ) and with Saint-Grégoire the only church. The Hure rises in the east of Ban-de-Sapt , a right tributary of the Meurthe . The highest elevations in the municipality are called:

  • Chariot 888  m
  • L'Ormont 874  m
  • Tete de Raves 873  m

In addition to the central village of Launois, Ban-de-Sapt includes the hamlets and farms of Le Palon, Laitre or earlier Laître, Le Rouaux, Les Fols, Nayemont, La Fontenelle, La Vercoste, Frabois, Bourras, Gemainfaing, La Faîte, Le Fraiteux, Le Haut du Port, Les Évaux and Chenigoutte .

Neighboring municipalities of Ban-de-Sapt are Ménil-de-Senones in the north, Châtas in the northeast, La Grande-Fosse in the east, La Petite-Fosse in the southeast, Nayemont-les-Fosses in the south, and Saint-Dié-des-Vosges in the Southwest, Saint-Jean-d'Ormont and Denipaire to the west and Moyenmoutier to the northwest.

history

The name of the community points to an earlier ban - the Ad Septem abietem ban , which included seven village locations . An early church in the village of Laître is confirmed from religious archives for the year 738. Remnants of the church - the choir and a vault were still visible in 1839. Around the year 1000 secured the Abbey of Moyenmoutier the Via Salaria for the Dukes of Lorraine, which over the Vosges to the hall and the abbey Ebersmünster led. In 1593 the villages in Ban-de-Sapt were under the control of the Duke of Lorraine, the Abbey of Moyenmoutier, the provost of Saint-Dié and the Bailiwick of Nancy (replaced in 1710 by the Bailiwick of Saint-Die). In 1790 the municipality of Ban-de-Sapt was founded in its present form. It was initially part of the canton Saales and the district of Saint-Dié. The Principality of Salm was annexed under Couthon's responsibility and so Ban-de-Sapt came to the Canton of Senones together with the communities of the Hure Valley . From the beginning of the 19th century, the traffic flows changed: the main connection from Strasbourg to Upper Lorraine followed the Breuschtal to the Col de Saales , but from there it now crossed the Fave valley to Saint-Dié . The Strasbourg – Saint-Dié railway followed the same route . The shift in traffic gradually sidelined Ban-de-Sapt.

In 1845 the town hall was built in the main village of Launois. At that time the community had 1519 inhabitants (279 houses with 378 households). Only 154 men had the right to vote at the time. In 1845 there was a public school for boys and a Catholic school for girls and boys. With an area of 2,226 hectares, Ban-de-Sapt was a relatively large municipality. The land use was distributed over 1,281 ha of arable land, 425 ha of meadows, 378 ha of forest and 29 ha of gardens, orchards, hemp fields near houses or fallow land. The main crops were rye, some wheat, oats, buckwheat and potatoes. There were four mills, a sawmill and three limestone quarries. Cattle breeding and trading also played a role.

Monument at La Fontenelle French War Cemetery

The Colline de la Fontenelle in the municipality of Ban-de-Sapt was a long and bitterly contested strategically important height during the First World War . After the French conquered the height on September 14, 1914 under General Dubail, the front froze to trench warfare here too, which lasted until July 1915.

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture and forestry play only a subordinate role in Ban-de-Sapt today. The cheese production and the distilling of fruit schnapps ( eau de vie ) are worthy of mention. There are 20 farms in the municipality of Ban-de-Sapt (cereal, fruit and vegetable growing, dairy farming, horse, cattle, goat and sheep breeding). Many residents are commuters to the surrounding larger communities.

Ban-de-Sapt is located away from the nationally important traffic routes. Narrow roads lead from Saint-Dié-des-Vosges and Senones to Launois. Another road connection leads via Le Vermont to the Col de Hantz , which leads into the Alsatian Breuschtal . The nearest train station is in the town of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, twelve kilometers away, on the Strasbourg – Saint-Dié railway line with connections to Épinal and Lunéville .
