in the Vosges department

Sapois is a French commune with 641 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges and the Hautes Vosges municipal association .

geography

Cascade of the Bouchot River

The municipality of Sapois is located in the Vosges between the towns of Remiremont and Gérardmer , more spaciously between Épinal and Mulhouse in south-east Lorraine.

The municipality of Sapois encompasses almost 17 km² and includes the catchment area of the Menaurupt , a tributary of the Bouchot , which drains over the Moselotte to the Moselle . This includes the valley area of the Menaurupt formed by a glacier, the high valley of the Ruisseau de Fouchon mountain stream and the parts of the mountainous region on both sides of the Menaurupt that extend north and south. In the south, a six-kilometer-long, steeply rising mountain ridge, but only 500 to 1000 meters wide, delimits the municipal area of the Bouchot valley , in the northeast the highest point of the municipality is reached at 1005 meters above sea level. Near the Menaurupt source, the transition takes place over the Col de Sapois (835 m) to the valley of the Ruisseau du Pheny , which continues to the Lac de Gérardmer .

Two thirds of the municipality are covered with forests, the largest contiguous forest is the Forêt de l'Urson in the northeast.

The Menaurupttal is characterized by a very loose development. Only in the area of the core town and the 600-meter-high Menaurupt district is the settlement density somewhat higher. For climatic reasons, there is no significant arable farming in the valley area, instead meadows and pastures dominate.

In addition to the district of Menaurupt , Le Haut du Tôt also belongs to the municipality, a hamlet at an altitude of 800 meters with the highest church in the Vosges, built in 1832.

Neighboring communities of Rochesson are Le Tholy in the north, Gérardmer in the northeast, Rochesson in the east, Gerbamont in the south and Vagney in the west.

history

The area between Vagney and Gérardmer was slowly settled by clearing from the 7th century. As in the entire Vosges region, monks and the founding of monasteries played a central role. Sapois was part of the extensive Ban de Vagney , which also included the now independent communities Vagney, Gerbamont , Basse-sur-le-Rupt , Saint-Amé and Saulxures . The Ban de Vagney was half subordinate to the Dukes of Lorraine and half to the Chapter of Remiremont .

The municipality of Sapois emerged from a lower and upper village ( le Haut-Sapois; le Bas-Sapois ), which gradually grew together. Until 1793 the place still had the spelling Sappois .

In 1840 the mayor's building and school were built in Sapois ( Mairie-école ). A school was inaugurated in the Menaurupt district in 1861, and six years later in the high-lying Le Haut du Tôt. In the latter, the school was closed in 1990. Le Haut du Tôt was the scene of intense fighting in 1944 to liberate the city of Gérardmer.
