geography

The municipality of Provenchères-et-Colroy is located in the Vosges , about 15 kilometers northeast of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges and about 70 kilometers southwest of Strasbourg .

The 19.13 km² municipal area extends to the north of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park on the upper reaches of the Fave River . The Fave rises in the neighboring municipality of Lubine and still has the character of a mountain stream, the valley of which widens to around 1000 m width from Colroy-la-Grande. In the north, the municipality meets the ridge of the Vosges, which marks the border with the Bas-Rhin department in the historic Alsace region . On the Vosges ridge, the 793 m high Le Voyemont is the highest place in the municipality. At the northernmost point of Provenchères-et-Colroy, the Col de Saales overcomes the mountains. At 554 m pass height not only a busy trunk road (D420), but also the railway line Strasbourg – Saint-Dié leads into the Alsatian Breuschtal .

Almost half of the municipal area is covered by forests. The altitude of the valley locations of over 600 meters means that there is hardly any economic arable farming, which is why pastures dominate the valleys and on the lower slopes. There are also individual mountain farms in the higher elevations.

Provenchères-et-Colroy includes the small town of Provenchères-sur-Fave and the village of Colroy-la-Grande, the districts of Les Truches, Brafosse, Bestru, La Fouxelle, Les Basses Hières, Les Ailes, Le Houssot, La Neuve Ville, Les Agelins and Nouveau Saales .

Neighboring communities of Provenchères-et-Colroy are Saales in the north and north-east, Lubine in the east, Lusse in the south-east, Le Beulay in the south-west and La Petite-Fosse in the north-west.

history

The municipality was created on January 1, 2016 through the merger of the two previously independent municipalities Provenchères-sur-Fave and Colroy-la-Grande .

Provenchères-sur-Fave

The place name probably goes back to the Latin proventus (harvest, yield). At the end of the 10th century, the place appeared as Provencherioe . In 1172 gave Duke Matthew I. of Abbey Beaupré the spell to Provenchères.

In one of the amendments to the Peace of Frankfurt in 1871, the border between France and the German Empire was established at the Col de Saales . Provenchères, which had previously belonged to the canton of Saales , formed its own canton on April 5, 1873 ( canton Provenchères-sur-Fave ). The additional designation -sur-Fave led the community since a corresponding ordinance of December 26, 1881 to differentiate itself from other communities called Provenchères . Ecclesiastically, Provenchères was dependent on the Saint-Dié chapter. Later the parish of Provenchères belonged to the deanery of Salm, the diocese of Toul and the diocese of Saint-Dié. The town hall (Hotel de ville) and the school were built in 1845.

Colroy-la-Grande

The place name Courai also appeared for the first time in 1172. The place name is attested in 1768 as Collis regia and only with the establishment of the municipality in 1793 did the name Colroy-la-Grande appear . The village belonged together with the neighboring Lubine to the Bailiwick of Saint Dié. The Church of St. John the Baptist was built in 1774 and was part of the deanery and diocese of St. Dié. The town hall (Mairie), the boys 'and girls' schools were built in 1856. Colroy-la-Grande, which had previously belonged to the canton of Saales, also came to the canton of Provenchères-sur-Fave on April 5, 1873.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the former municipality of Provenchères-sur-Fave shows a black, red-tongued bear head in a square shield in the 1st and 4th field in silver; in the 2nd and 3rd field a gold-blue nesting in six places. It is the coat of arms of the Dolmaire family , ennobled in 1632 , who worked in Saint-Dié as stable masters and seal keepers. The coat of arms of the former municipality of Colroy-la-Grande showed two silver fir trees on a green shield under a golden bee.
