Mairie Châtas

The municipality of Châtas is located in the Vosges , about 14 kilometers northeast of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges , the capital (chef-lieu) of the arrondissement of the same name. The 5.55 km², almost completely forested municipal area of Châtas extends in the east up to a few hundred meters to the Vosges ridge, which here forms the border to the ( Département Bas-Rhin ). The village of Châtas lies in a narrow basin that was washed out by the Ruisseau de la Saales mountain stream . This flows as the Ruisseau des Gouttes in a north-westerly direction to the Rabodeau , a right tributary of the Meurthe . The valley basin of Châtas is framed by wooded heights that tower 100 to 150 meters above the valley floor. The highest elevations in the municipality are called:

  • Blamont 611  m
  • Haut de l'Estrépoud 754  m
  • Haut de Belfays 810  m

history

The area of today's municipality belonged to the Obersalm line of the Salm family . In 1739 they were appointed imperial princes. From 1751 until the French Revolution, the Principality of Salm-Salm existed with the residence in the nearby small town of Senones . When Lorraine fell to France in 1766, the small principality was an exclave in France. In 1793 France annexed the principality and Châtas became a municipality within today's borders. The name of the community was initially Chatay , in 1801 it was changed to Châtas .

Ecclesiastically, the parish of Châtas belonged to the diocese of Toul, which in 1777 split into the dioceses of Toul, Saint-Die and Nancy. The diocese of Saint-Dié responsible for Châtas was dissolved after the Concordat of 1801 and was not reconstituted until 1823.

Witch trials in Châtas have been handed down from the 17th century, which is unusual in that in 1634 there were only 15 families in Châtas.
