Norbert Gatzweiler (born March 18, 1942 in Koblenz ) is a German lawyer and criminal defense attorney in Cologne . He is also an honorary professor at the law faculty of the University of Cologne .

Life

Gatzweiler was admitted to the bar in 1971 and founded his law firm in the same year with a focus on criminal law , in particular white-collar crime . After working as a lecturer for the practice of criminal proceedings from the mid-1990s, he was appointed honorary professor on February 22, 2002.

Gatzweiler also became publicly known through mandates in proceedings that received media attention. Among other things, he defended the former board member Peter Rieck in the process of the Omega 55 scandal at HSH Nordbank and Hellmut Trienekens in the Cologne garbage scandal ; He also represented Heinrich von Pierer and Klaus Kleinfeld in the Siemens bribery affair as well as Gustav Adolf Schröder as head of the largest German municipal savings bank and Michael Frenzel as TUI boss; he was also involved in the Mannesmann process and the Herstatt processes .

In 2013, at a conference at the University of Trier, Gatzweiler was critical of the Kachelmann process and the media coverage of it.

At the beginning of 2014, the Teldafax proceedings for delaying insolvency began , in which Gatzweiler is representing the former CEO Klaus Bath. Shortly afterwards, he was the victim of an attempted kidnapping , from which, although tied, he was able to escape by fleeing from his own car in the underground car park exit.

Since 2015, Gatzweiler has been representing his colleague Hanno Berger, who works in tax law , in a mammoth tax evasion case involving controversial cum-ex deals . In June, a house search in the Frankfurt Deutsche Bank skyscraper was carried out on this subject .

For several years, Gatzweiler was chairman of the criminal law working group of the German Lawyers' Association and has been honorary chairman of the association since 2006. According to a ranking by Wirtschaftswoche , in 2011 his law firm was one of the 25 “top law firms for white collar crime” in Germany.

Gatzweiler is married to his partner Gaby Münchhalffen.
