The increasing mechanization of agriculture and the numerous deaths of the First World War led to a drop in the number of inhabitants to the lowest levels in recent times. The increase between 1866 and 1876 is due to immigrants from the realm of Alsace-Lorraine. The decline between 1911 and 1921 is a result of the many casualties in World War I and the 1918 flu wave.
