history

Church Assomption Notre Dame

Linguists suspect that the place name Corcieux comes from the Gallic Coratis Olea , the Latin equivalent of Curtis (place) . This word denotes the headquarters of an agricultural domain. This later developed into Cortisoil, Courseul, Corcieux. Many traces on the plateau indicate human presence in the first or second century of our era.

The name of the village "Correçoul" was first mentioned in a document in 1246. The deanery of Corcieux comprised the villages of Corcieux, Bellegoutte, Les Cours, Mariemont, La Nolneuve, Thiriville, La Houssière and La Côte. It belonged to the Duchy of Lorraine and the Chapter of Remiremont , which Corcieux also looked after in pastoral care. From 1790 to 1801 Corcieux was the capital of a canton in the Bruyères district .

Resistance fighters attacked the German occupation forces on June 6, 1944. The resistance of a few hundred men achieved its goal: the binding of Wehrmacht units in the Vosges. But the price was high: the execution of many captured maquisards .

On November 15, 1944, the German units, fleeing from the approaching American troops, drove the residents of Corcieux into the cold winter mountains and set the village on fire with flamethrowers.

The architect François Boleslaw Jankowski from the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Development was entrusted with the reconstruction. Jankowski, who was also responsible for the other destroyed cities in the Meurthe valley - he reconstructed a. a. the churches of Anould and Saulcy-sur-Meurthe - implemented a new vision of the city: wide streets, a wide city center and relocation of factories to the periphery. The new Corcieux was inaugurated on May 22, 1955.

coat of arms

Corcieux was in full ownership of the Dukes of Lorraine and the Chapter of Remiremont. The coat of arms ( heraldic on the right) shows a silver Alérion (mutilated eagle) from Lorraine and on the left the crossed keys of the chapter of Remiremont. The central tower refers to the fortress La Tour - known as Fléville - in Corcieux. The gold of the tower and the red of the shield correspond to the Lorraine colors.

Culture

The Assomption Notre-Dame church (Our Lady of the Assumption) was destroyed by the occupying forces in November 1944 and rebuilt around the preserved church tower after 1945. An organ was installed in 1958 by the Jacquot-Lavergne organ builder from Rampersvillers.

economy

In addition to small businesses (bakery, car repair), craft and tourism are playing an increasingly important role. There are three campsites in the municipality. There is also a cheese factory belonging to the Lactalis group on site.
