The Lactalis group of companies is a French dairy group , one of the largest European dairies . Lactalis specializes 90% in the cheese specialties and brands sector and is the market leader in France ahead of Savencia , and second in France behind the Danone group in terms of the dairy products sector as a whole .

Company history

André Besnier founded a dairy under his name in Laval in October 1933 . On the first day, 35 liters of milk were sold and 17 camemberts were made. In 1950 the annual milk sales were already three million liters, the annual Camembert production was 725,000 units.

After the death of André Besnier in 1955, his son Michel took over the management. With Le Président , he succeeded in making the world's first branded camembert from pasteurized milk in 1968 , and in 1969 he developed the first long- life milk . In the following decades Besnier acquired additional dairies and opened new production facilities.

The company entered the international market in the 1980s with the acquisition of the American soft cheese producer "Belmont". Further acquisitions will follow. In 1999 Besnier was renamed Lactalis due to globalization. 2001 after the death of Michel Besnier his son Emmanuel Besnier took over the management.

At the end of 2005, the company offered Lactel , a long- life milk in fresh milk quality, for the first time.

At the beginning of 2006, Lactalis bought the Italian cheese manufacturer Galbani (brands: Bel Paese and Mozzarella Santa Lucia) from the investment company BC Partners . On July 1, 2008, Baer AG , the largest Swiss soft cheese manufacturer, was taken over (previous shareholders were the Baer family with 65% and Emmi AG with 35%). In July 2011, Lactalis took control of the Italian dairy group Parmalat .

At the beginning of 2012, Lactalis took over the second largest Swedish dairy producer Skånemejerier. With the takeover of the South Indian company Tirumala Milk Products , the company entered the Indian milk processing market, which was previously largely dominated by smallholder cooperatives.

In May 2017, Lactalis submitted a takeover bid for the dairies of Omira Oberland-Milchverwertung Ravensburg GmbH . OMIRA Oberland-Milchverwertung GmbH will continue to collect the milk from the suppliers and then sell it to Lactalis. On June 22, 2017, the shareholders' meeting of OMIRA approved. The approval of the cartel office took place on August 31, 2017, on September 1, 2017 the takeover came into force.

Also in 2017, Lactalis took over the American Danone subsidiary Stonyfield Farm (largest organic yoghurt manufacturer in the USA) for 875 million dollars ; the sale was a US competition watchdog requirement in the wake of Danone's acquisition of The Whitewave Foods Company . In January 2018, Lactalis also took over Icelandic Milk & Skyr Corporation in the USA, a manufacturer of Skyr yoghurt under the siggi’s brand with sales of around 200 million dollars, in which the Swiss Emmi Group had a minority share of 22%.

Since December 2017, baby milk products have been recalled around the world due to the risk of salmonella after more than 20 babies fell ill in France. Almost 7000 tons of total production could be affected. At the end of December, the French judiciary opened a preliminary investigation against the dairy company. In January 2018, following pressure from the Minister of Economic Affairs, Lactalis withdrew from the market all baby milk products from the Craon plant , regardless of their date of manufacture.

Company structure and data

The company has been owned by the Besnier family since it was founded. Lactalis is present in 140 countries and generated sales of around 16 billion euros in 2014 with 61,000 employees. The main factory in Domfront produces around half a million Camemberts every day.

The Lactalis Deutschland GmbH branch, founded in 1986 , is based in Kehl . 25 percent of French cheese exports to Germany today come from Lactalis. Lactalis Suisse GmbH was founded in 2004 with its headquarters in Würenlingen . The Austrian seat is Himberg-Velm .

In September 2006, the EU Commission gave its approval for a joint venture between Lactalis (60%) and Nestlé (40%) in the fresh produce sector under the name Lactalis Nestlé Produits Frais (LNPF), which would begin at the end of 2006 . The cooperation project extends to 8 EU countries (France, Belgium, Luxembourg, United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Portugal) and Switzerland. With this campaign, Lactalis moved to second place in the global dairy industry behind Nestlé and ahead of the Dean Foods (USA) and Danone (France) groups.

Lactalis holds 24.06% of the Bel Group (as of May 31, 2010). Lactalis has held 83.3% of the Italian Parmalat Group since July 2011 , making it the world's largest dairy group. On September 1, 2017, Lactalis also took over the butter, cheese and milk powder manufacturer OMIRA, based in Ravensburg, with the approval of the Cartel Office.

Protests

In August 2016, protests by French dairy farmers broke out in front of the company's main administrative building. In addition, Lactalis products were removed from the shelves in supermarkets. The background to the demands was that, in the opinion of the milk suppliers, the remuneration for raw milk was insufficient : Lactalis paid 365 euros for 1000 liters of milk in 2014, 309 euros in 2015 and 257 euros in 2016, while the production costs for the farmers were 350 euros. After further blockades of the company's dairies, company boss Emmanuel Besnier agreed in negotiations with union representatives to pay 290 euros per ton of milk.

Baby milk scandal

Infant milk boxes contaminated with Salmonella were discovered at the end of 2017. More than twelve million packages were recalled. Minister Bruno Lemaire then quoted Emmanuel Besnier to make a statement. According to the CEO, Emmanuel Besnier, eighty-three countries are affected by the product recall.

Product range and brands

Lactalis products cover a full range in the “high - quality self - service area ” and, since the beginning of 2006, also the “cheese counter ” area through a sales force cooperation with the local market leader “ Friesland Foods Cheese ”.

The main brand of Lactalis in Germany, Austria and Switzerland is the soft cheese - umbrella brand Le Président , other well-known cheese brands are Société ( Roquefort and others), Salakis (sheep cheese) and Galbani , in the milk sector Lactel .
