Omira in Ravensburg

Omira Oberland Milchverwertung GmbH was founded in Ravensburg in 1929 by Franz Schenk Freiherr von Stauffenberg for the processing and marketing of regional milk as a modern dairy for the time. The focus was on the production of butter and dry milk . In 1961, Karl Nuber joined the company. In 1965 the branches in Neuravensburg and Dachau were incorporated . From 1971 until his departure in 2001, Nuber was in charge of the management of "Omira Oberland-Milchverwertung GmbH" and formed a group of companies. The coverage area of the Omira has grown continuously through the addition of branch operations. Special steps were the incorporation of the Allgäuer Emmentaler cheese dairy in Neuravensburg in 1987. In 1993 the takeover of “Bodensee-Albmilch Rottweil” followed and in 1999 the cooperation with the “Neuburger Milchwerke”. In 2008 Omira received ten gold and two silver quality awards from the German Agricultural Society .

In 2009, the Omira was on strike by Upper Swabian dairy farmers because the milk purchase price was too low.

In 2010, the Omira hit the headlines when it became known that from April 2003 to March 2009 cheese from the Netherlands was sold under the name “Bodenseekäse”, “Deutscher Schnittkäse” and “The mildly spicy cheese from Lake Constance”. At first, the company claimed that it had not made any mistakes with it, but eventually the company apologized to customers under public pressure. The public prosecutor's office is investigating executives for a violation of the Food Act (January 2011); an authorized officer of a subsidiary was fined.

In mid-2017, the French dairy group Lactalis submitted a takeover offer for Omira's dairies. The Omira representatives approved the offer at the shareholders' meeting on June 22, 2017. The approval of the cartel office took place on August 31, 2017, on September 1, 2017 the takeover came into force. OMIRA GmbH has been part of the Lactalis Group since September 1, 2017.
