history

WhiteWave was founded in 1977 in Boulder, Colorado by Steve Demos with the help of a $ 500 loan as a small manufacturer of vegetarian products specializing in tofu . In 1978 Demos founded the subsidiary Silk.

From 2002 the company was wholly owned by Dean Foods , then the largest dairy group in the United States, which had previously acquired a large minority stake and in 2004 also took over Horizon Organic , the largest organic milk producer in the United States at the time. In 2009, the Belgian company Vandemoortele sold its Alpro soy division to Dean Foods for EUR 325 million.

In 2012, WhiteWave (combined with Silk, Horizon Organic and Alpro) went public via IPO and was spun off from Dean Foods in 2013. That same year, WhiteWave took over Earthbound Farm , California, for $ 600 million , the largest organic vegetable grower in the United States (60% national market share for packaged organic salads at the time). So Delicious from Oregon followed in the fall of 2014, followed by the Californian Wallaby Yogurt Company in 2015 for a price of 125 million dollars.

In 2016, the acquisition of WhiteWave by the French food company Danone for $ 10.4 billion (including liabilities of $ 12.5 billion) was agreed. After an in-depth examination, the approval under competition law was available at the end of March 2017. The authorities in the USA ordered the sale of the Danone subsidiary Stonyfield Farm (largest organic yoghurt manufacturer in the USA), which went to competitor Lactalis for 875 million dollars . WhiteWave's transaction to Danone closed on April 12, 2017. The merged activities of WhiteWave and Danone in North America appeared externally as DanoneWave from April 2017 to April 2018 , and since then as Danone.
