Company history
The company was founded in 1865 as "Établissements Jules Bel" in Orgelet in the French Jura department . The first branch was opened in Great Britain in 1929 , others followed in 1933 in Belgium and 1959 in Germany .
Since the 1960s, Bel has expanded rapidly internationally and taken over numerous cheese factories, first in Europe and the USA, and since the late 1990s increasingly in North Africa. The group now operates 22 production sites worldwide and has branches in 120 countries. The Bel Group is organizationally divided into four geographic regions: Western Europe, Eastern Europe, America and International.
Bel employs almost 11,000 people. In 2014 sales amounted to around EUR 2.78 billion and EBIT to EUR 199 million. With a production volume of around 285,600 tonnes of cheese is Bel one of the leading manufacturers of melting and cream cheese .

As of December 31, 2015, the company's shares were distributed as follows:
- Unibel and shares of the Bel / Fiévet families: 71.1%. Unibel is an umbrella holding whose main company is the Bel Group. It emerged in 1999 from the Fiévet family's carbon dioxide production company La Carbonique , which has held a stake in Bel since 1970, became the largest single shareholder over time and became the majority shareholder in Bel in 1987 through the takeover of the Bel family holding company SFPE.
