geography

Location of Vagney in the Vosges department

The municipality of Vagney in the Vosges is located on the Moselotte , ten kilometers east of the town of Remiremont , seen more spaciously between Épinal and Mulhouse , in the south-east of Lorraine.

The municipality of Vagney encompasses almost 25 km² and includes part of the Moselle valley, the lower sections of the side valleys of Lemont and Bouchot as well as parts of the mountainous region on both sides of the Moselle to the north-east and south. The mountain streams Lemont and Bouchot flow in Vagney into the Moselotte, the valley of which is widened up to 1500 meters in the mouth areas. The settlement centers of Vagney and the northern district of Crémanvillers lie on the left bank of the Moselotte, the southern district of Zainvillers lies on both sides of the river.

In the southwest and northeast corner of the community area, the highest points are reached at 820 meters above sea level. The higher mountain area is densely forested and belongs to the forest areas Forêt de Longegoutte and Forêt d'Housseramont .

The approximately 400 meters high Moselotte Valley is characterized by agricultural areas outside of the generously populated areas. The alternation of forest and pasture areas is characteristic of the high valleys of the Lemont and Bouchot .

Neighboring municipalities of Vagney are Le Tholy in the north, Sapois in the northeast, Gerbamont in the east, Basse-sur-le-Rupt in the southeast, Thiéfosse in the south, Vecoux and Dommartin-lès-Remiremont in the southwest and Le Syndicat in the west.

history

The name Vagney could be derived from the German word weiden . Another theory calls a Wado (Latinized Wadinius ) as a Germanic namesake. The current name gradually emerged via Wahiniaco (11th century), Vainiaco and Wainiers (12th century) and Vachegney (14th century).

The area around Vagney was slowly settled by clearing from the 7th century. As in the entire Vosges region, monks and the founding of monasteries played a central role. The individual hamlets from which the place Vagney emerged were made flood-proof. The place was the center of the large-scale ban of the same name , which also included the now independent municipalities of Gerbamont , Basse-sur-le-Rupt , Rochesson , Saint-Amé and Saulxures . The Ban de Vagney was half subordinate to the Dukes of Lorraine and half to the Chapter of Remiremont .

In the early 17th century, Vagney was known for breeding horses. In 1634 the plague raged in Vagney and many farms were given up. The district Malaide ( = sick ) between Vagney and Sapois still reminds of this event. Agriculture was limited to the Moselotte valley, many residents earned their living as shepherds, lumberjacks or stone breakers.

From 1830 the textile industry came to the Moselotte valley. Lean-Baptiste Flageollet founded his first factory at a water mill in today's district of Zainvillers. The spinning and weaving mills worked around the clock around 1860, and at the beginning of the 20th century more than 40% of Vagey's inhabitants were working in the textile factories. The company's founder, Flageollet, provided workers' apartments, schools, kindergartens and hospices and promoted the establishment of sports clubs.

The town hall was built in 1842, the girls' school in 1848 and the post office in 1909. As early as 1879, Vagney and Zainvillers had a connection to the Remiremont - Cornimont railway line , which was closed in 1992.

One fifth of Vagey's houses were destroyed during World War II. A memorial commemorates the fallen of the two world wars.
