La Fontenelle war memorial

The 627 meter high hill La Fontenelle is exposed in the Vosges Mountains in the Vosges department , near the town of Senones in the municipality of Ban-de-Sapt . The French military cemetery La Nécropole Nationale de la Fontenelle (La Fontenelle for short) was established in 1921 at Height 627, which was fiercely contested during the First World War because of its strategic importance for the Vosges front .

history

After the Battle of Lorraine in August 1914 and the Battle of the Marne (1914), the front in the Vosges froze. The French troops held the strategically important altitude 627 La Fontenelle , while the German troops on the eastern flank were able to keep behind strong entrenchments and made advances up the hill. In heavy and loss-making battles between June 22nd and July 25th, 1915, the German troops ( 30th Reserve Division (German Empire) ) initially conquered the heights, but were then thrown back in two French counter-attacks. The frontal attacks were followed by mine warfare in the trenches, accompanied by smaller advances. A memorial designed by Émile Bachelet was inaugurated in 1925 on the cemetery, which was built between 1921 and 1923. The German soldiers lie in the Senones military cemetery.
