The Collet du Linge (Eng. Lingekopf ), more rarely referred to as Col du Linge , is a 987 meter high French pass in the Vosges in the Haut-Rhin department .
history
During the First World War , the Collet du Linge was on the front line that separated German and French troops in the Vosges. From July 20 to October 15, 1915, the pass was the scene of bloody and costly fighting (known as the Bataille du Linge in France ). French mountain troops tried in vain to storm the mountain ranges ( Lingekopf , Barrenkopf , Kleinkopf and Schratzmännele ) , which were heavily fortified on the German side with bunkers and barbed wire entanglements and defended by Bavarian Landwehr regiments with artillery and machine guns . After a final counterattack by German troops, the front froze and the focus of the conflict shifted to Hartmannswillerkopf . Until the end of the war, there were only artillery duels and raiding troops at the Collet du Linge . The clashes on this section of the front claimed a total of 17,000 deaths.
On August 9, 1981, the Musée mémorial du Linge was officially inaugurated as a memorial. This is run on a voluntary basis by a local association, provides information about the course of the battle and also shows French and German finds from the battlefield. The battlefield is listed as a monument historique .
Tour de France
1957 , 1967 and 2001 resulted stages of the Tour de France on the Collet du Linge.
