Renate von Gizycki

Renate von Gizycki (born September 10, 1928 in Braunschweig ) is a German ethnologist , South Sea researcher , author , poet and translator who lives in Kassel .

Life

Von Gizycki, née Cronjaeger, grew up in Giessen, Berlin and Goslar. She obtained her Abitur in 1947. She then stayed in England for two years and returned to Germany in 1950. After various activities and stays abroad, she began studying ethnology, sociology, cultural anthropology and the like in 1959. a. with Helmuth Plessner , Folklore, Philosophy and History at the University of Göttingen . In 1970 she received her doctorate with a dissertation on the role of the poet in Polynesian society (Haku mele), which was published in 1971.

This was followed by research stays and trips to the USA, Vietnam and the Pacific: u. a. Hawaii , Tonga , Fiji , Samoa , New Zealand and Papua New Guinea . Due to this experience she showed a special commitment in the dissemination of the literature of the South Seas in Germany through editing and translations of Polynesian poets and writers, as well as through lectures and readings. For Kindler's new literary encyclopedia she took over the part The modern literature of Polynesia / Oceania in 1991 .

She had lectureships at the Göttingen Institute for Ethnology, but also worked as a freelance worker and author at Westdeutscher Rundfunk. She publishes articles in publications such as the Frankfurter Hefte , the Anthropos or in Alternative (Berlin), Kürbiskern (Munich) or L '80 (Berlin).

She is an honorary member of the German-Pacific Society and the Göttingen Society for Ethnology.

Renate von Gizycki had been married to Horst von Gizycki (1930–2009), professor of psychology of art at the University of Kassel , since 1955 .
