Epeli Hau'ofa

Epeli Hau'ofa (* 1939 in Papua New Guinea , † January 11, 2009 in Suva ) was a Fijian writer and professor of anthropology .

Life

Epeli Hau'ofa, son of a missionary family from Tonga , studied in Papua, Tonga, Fiji, Australia and Canada ; he received his PhD in anthropology from the Australian National University . He was the palace archivist in Tonga, head of the sociology department and head of the School of Social and Economic Development at the University of the South Pacific .

In 1997 he founded the Oceania Center for Arts and Culture , of which he was also director. His publications include the ethnography Mekeo , a collection of short stories ( Tales of the Tikongs ), the novel Kisses in the Nederends, and articles on A New Oceania . Hau'ofa was most recently a citizen of Fiji.
