Johann Baptist Drechsler (born January 28, 1756 in Lichtental , today Vienna , † April 28, 1811 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter who was best known for his flower paintings.

life and work

Johann Baptist Drechsler was the son of the porcelain painter Josef Drechsler and his wife Maria Anna Vogt. It can be traced back to the Viennese porcelain factory between 1772 and 1782. At the Manufactory Drawing School of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts , he became the first professor in the newly established class for flower painting in 1787. In 1807 he became director of the academy.

His painting model was the Dutch flower painter Jan van Huysum . Drechsler "[...] led flower painting in Vienna away from the decorative style of the Baroque and towards a detailed naturalism." With this he had a great influence on the scientific depictions of plants in the 18th century. He is considered to be the founder of the Vienna School of Flower Painting.
