Èmile Demangel

Émile Joseph Demangel (born June 20, 1882 in La Chapelle-aux-Bois , † October 11, 1968 in Xertigny ) was a French track cyclist .

In 1906, Émile Demangel started at the Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens and finished fourth in the time trial over 333.3 meters and in the race over 5000 meters. 1908 was his most successful year: at the Olympic Games in London he won silver in the sprint and was fifth in the team pursuit with the French team , at the World Track Championships in Leipzig he was third in the sprint and won the renowned Grand Prix de Paris for amateurs . In the same year, on August 24th, he set a world record over 500 meters with 34.24 seconds. In 1910 he reached third place again at the Grand Prix de Paris .

In his last place of residence, Xertigny, a street is named after Demangel. The Olympic rings adorn his tombstone in the local cemetery.
