Brian Fowler

Brian Andrew Fowler (born September 13, 1962 in Christchurch ) is a retired New Zealand cyclist .

Brian Fowler was one of New Zealand's most successful cyclists in the 1980s and 1990s. Between 1984 and 1996 he competed four times in a row at the Olympic Games in various disciplines on the road and on the track . His best finish was a seventh place in the points race at the Games in 1984 in Los Angeles . Twice, in 1988 and 1989, he was New Zealand champion in road racing and in 1995 in the individual time trial . He won the Tour of Southland eight times, the Tour of Wellington four times and the Tour of Tasmania in 1990 . But he also started in races in Europe and won the Hessen Tour in 1991 and the Saxony Tour in 1994 . In 1986 he won the Isle of Man International (also Manx Trophy) race, which was the most important international amateur race in Great Britain at the time.

Fowler achieved his greatest success at the Commonwealth Games . In 1982 in Brisbane he won the silver medal in the team pursuit , four years later at the Games in Edinburgh also a silver medal in the road race. In 1990, at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland , he was twice successful, winning the gold medal in the individual time trial and the silver medal in the road race. At the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria , he again achieved second place in the road race.

In 2002, the now 40-year-old Brian Fowler was honored by the organizers of the Tour of Southland for his record of 14 participations and 68 stage wins.
