Marco Ballotta (born April 3, 1964 in Casalecchio di Reno ) is a former Italian football goalkeeper . Today he is the sports director of FC Modena .
Player career
The beginnings
Marco Ballotta comes from the youth of his home club FC Bologna , but his first professional station was in San Lazzaro, where he played from 1982 to 1984. He spent the next six years at FC Modena before playing in Serie A for AC Cesena for the first time in January 1991 . After only six months, he left the club after relegation back to Parma , where he signed a long-term contract with first division competitor AC Parma .
AC Parma
With AC Parma , Marco Ballotta won the European Cup Winners' Cup in a great first season in 1992/93 . However, his good shape only lasted a year. He played the two games in the UEFA Super Cup against AC Milan before he had to sit down on the bench again, including in the lost final in the 1994 Cup Winners' Cup .
Relegation and promotion battle
Dissatisfied with his position as second goalkeeper, Ballotta left the top club and went to Brescia Calcio . With his new team, however, he rose in a memorable bad season with only two wins from 34 games from bottom of the table. In the summer of 1995 Ballotta decided to move to the ambitious second division club AC Reggiana . With the team, he also managed to get promoted to Serie A at the first attempt , but at the end of the season the direct relegation was certain - with 67 goals conceded Ballotta was the goalkeeper who had to reach behind him most often.
Lazio Rome
Despite the relegation, Marco Ballotta stayed in the first division and went to Lazio . Despite fewer appearances and the fact that he was nominally only goalkeeper number three at Lazio, the next few years were extremely successful for him and the club. Between 1997 and 2000 Ballotta won the European Cup Winners' Cup (1998), the UEFA Super Cup (1999), the Italian Supercup (1998, 2000), the Coppa Italia (1998, 2000) and was Italian champion (2000) with Lazio .
As a veteran
In the 2000/01 season he made a brief stint at Inter Milan , where he made six appearances as the second goalkeeper. The now 37-year-old goalkeeper went to his long-term ex-club, the second division club FC Modena , where he found his old strength and became a regular goalkeeper. With Modena he was promoted in the first year, but after two years in League 1, it went back to the second division. Ballotta now played second class again, but for FBC Treviso , which he led to promotion as a regular goalkeeper.
Return to Lazio
As the third goalkeeper, the 41-year-old Ballotta was signed for the second time by Lazio . Since the first two goalkeepers, Angelo Peruzzi and Matteo Sereni, were injured, he was allowed to play eight times in 2005/06. In the following season, goalkeeper Peruzzi remained true to the injury misfortune, which is why he ended his career and Ballotta was allowed to contribute with eleven appearances to reaching third place in the league and reaching the Champions League .
At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, the newly signed Uruguayan Fernando Muslera should actually take over the place in goal, but since he made several mistakes in the 1: 5 defeat against AC Milan , Ballotta was allowed to stay in goal and was able to work out a regular place. His contract with the Romans expired in 2008 and Ballotta waived another year as a footballer and became sports director at FC Modena , his old club.
Records
At 43 years and 253 days during the 1: 3 against Real Madrid on December 11, 2007, Ballotta is the oldest player to ever play in the Champions League - ahead of his compatriot Alessandro Costacurta , who was 40 on November 21, 2006 and played against AEK Athens for 213 days .
Also in the domestic Serie A , Ballotta is the record holder with an age of 44 years and 38 days in his last game against Genoa in 1893, ahead of Dino Zoff , who was 42 years and 34 days old in his last league game.
