Sun Lutang

Sun Lutang ( Chinese  孫祿堂  /  孙禄堂 , Pinyin Sūn Lùtáng , W.-G. Sun Lu-t'ang , * 1861 in the historical district of Wán in the village of Dōngrènjiā, today Shunping , administratively part of Wangdu in the province of Hebei , China ; † 16 December 1933 ) was a master of Chinese internal martial arts ( Neijiaquan ) and founder of the Sun style of Taijiquan . In addition, he is considered a Neo-Confucian and Taoist scholar.

Sun Lutang was first known for his Xingyiquan and Baguazhang , which he learned from famous teachers of his time, Guo Yunshen and Cheng Tinghua . Only at the age of 50 did Sun Lutang learn the Wu-Hao style of Taijiquan from Hao Weizhen . On this basis he developed his own style of Taijiquan ( Sun Style Taijiquan ), in which he incorporated elements of Xingyiquan and Baguazhang.

Unlike most martial artists of his day, Sun Lutang was educated. He has published numerous books, which are still considered standard works for the internal martial arts, and which helped to establish the martial arts not only as an activity of the uneducated classes. The popularization of the division of the Chinese martial arts into internal and external styles is mainly due to him and his books.
