Romilly-sur-Seine is a French commune with 14,451 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aube department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Nogent-sur-Seine . Romilly-sur-Seine is located on the Seine , on the border with the Marne department .

history

Today's town goes back to a Gallo-Roman settlement. The place is mentioned for the first time in 1163 under the Latinized form Romeliacum . It is a toponym that denotes the residence of a Romilius . In 1167 the Cistercian monastery Sellières was founded here in the Seine Valley , where Voltaire's body was buried in 1778 and lay there until it was transferred to Paris in 1791 and buried. During the French Revolution , the name of the place was Romilly-Voltaire .

Romilly-sur-Seine station is on the Paris – Mulhouse line , which is not yet electrified. The state railway maintains an old Technicentre SNCF - Site de démantèlement in Rue Aristide Briand , where Corail cars and TGV Sud-Est were serviced and vehicles were dismantled. In July 2019, a power head of a TGV Sud-Est was installed in front of the new location of the technology center in the industrial area southeast of the city.
